When you think of Devon, does your brain turn towards the rolling green hills brimming with farms with sheep and lambs within the patchwork fields, the rugged moorland of Dartmoor, or perhaps the stunning beaches, most of which are considered to get among the best inside world?
Many holidaymakers arrive at Devon for only such scenery, along with the experiences such locations may offer, from cycling down country lanes to picnics around the moors or combing rockpools for crabs along with other marine life.
One the simplest way to see South Devon is to apply a self-catering luxury cottage as a base camp. Unlike a normal, plain hotel with the "same old" four walls and decor, you can find an incredible feeling of enjoyment and fun just from renting a particular cottage hidden in a village or hamlet in the South Hams division of South Devon. Perhaps you'll spend the night in a very luxury thatched cottage near Salcombe, a converted barn near Dartmouth or possibly a country cottage near Kingsbridge. No matter what requirements you might have, for example travelling with quite a few young children and needing a sizable cottage or farmhouse, or with dogs and needing dog-friendly self-catering accommodation, there's an ample selection of boutique cottages along with other self-catering accommodation to choose from in the South Devon area.
Of course, it's likely that a new "home from home" will likely be off the beaten track. Unless you're in the middle with the few towns inside the South Hams for example Dartmouth, Kingsbridge or Ivybridge, you will be "out inside sticks", which means you will end up able to open your front door, take in the spectacular scenery, and set off on the walk, hike, cycling ride, or perhaps a quick drive on the beach, or moors. One of the most famous local walks will be the South Coast Walk over the South West Coastal Path, which runs for a total of 630 miles across the Westcountry. Several designated walks belong to the South Hams area, and will probably be near your lodgings. For example, Salcombe to Bolt Head is often a 3 mile walk through a landscape of rocky spires and pinnacles with inspiring views!
If you're within driving distance, you will not have to worry about catching flights from airports, either about the way to or from Devon, that takes away most significant stresses of the holiday! You can have a leisurely drive down with the counties of the West Country, perhaps stopping off at a pub for a normal ploughman's lunch before arriving at your self-catering cottage or other accommodation.
