This is my 48th and last column for Mint; I am taking a break to focus on projects and write a new book. Kriyamana Karma is the daily, instant Karma created in this lifetime and that we create in our life because of our free actions. Karma Yoga is after all a Yoga and unattached work can only be done as part of divine work. Thus, just meditation is not Yoga, neither is just asana or pranayama or any of the two.

Yoga was created ultimately to bring us into meditation and hence deeper states of awareness. It should consequently show the great benefits, both in the material and in the spiritual worlds, of Raja Yoga. The Karma is done to attain liberation (Moksha) from the cycle of the death and birth and free oneself from the great fear of being old and death. Postures were taught as a way to condition and prepare oneself for the deeper practices of meditation and absorption in Spirit's presence.
